Wall Finishings with Pillar Caps
Pillar caps and pier caps are the stones or concrete units that sit on top of a wall pillar or column. They act as a protective lid, helping rainwater run off rather than soak into the brickwork or blockwork below. That reduces the risk of staining, frost damage and loose joints over time, which matters on exposed gate posts and corners.
You can choose from stone pier caps in natural sandstone, reconstituted stone or concrete, as well as smooth granite pier cap styles for more contemporary schemes. Profiles range from flat and chamfered edges through to classic four–way weathered caps with a central peak. Used with matching coping stones on the main wall, they tie the whole garden boundary or front entrance together.
Pillar Cap Options
In most cases, pillar caps and pier caps are two names for the same item. They both describe the top unit that caps the pillar, whether that pillar is part of a garden wall, entrance or balustrade. Some people also call them pillar coping stones or pillar toppers, but the function remains the same. When sizing up, measure the finished pillar and allow a sensible overhang on each side so water drips clear of the face. Many wall pillar caps are designed to project by around 40–75 mm per side, although you should always check the product details and your installer’s advice. The right overhang balances protection, appearance and clearance for gates or railings.
Style and material choices depend on the rest of the build. Sandstone pier caps work well with Indian sandstone paving and walling, while smooth concrete or granite pillar caps suit rendered walls and porcelain paving. Think about colour, surface texture and the shape of existing copings, so your stone pillar caps sit comfortably alongside paths, driveways and garden features. It is also worth noting that a pile cap is a different product altogether. Pile caps are structural concrete units that sit on top of piles below ground level, whereas pier caps and pillar caps are the visible finishing pieces on top of walls and columns.
